The things we collect while travelling often become lasting reminders of where we have been and who we have met along the way. The Jones Backpack continues through a series of collaborations with creatives from across the region, each interpreting the places, people, and experiences that have shaped their perspective into collectible patches designed to be carried forward. For the Taiwan edition, PEDRO works with Yang, founder of Something Studio, whose photography explores the quiet relationships between humans and animals through moments of everyday connection.

Shaped by his ongoing work with animal shelters, Yang translates his visual language into a collection of playful patches that reflect companionship in its many forms. Each piece carries a simple idea: that the most meaningful journeys are often defined by those who share them with us.

Q:
Pet photography requires a different kind of patience. What have animals taught you about observing personality through the lens?

When it comes to life, respect matters more than affection. Photographing animals is very different from photographing people. Animals are incredibly honest—if they feel comfortable with you, they come closer; if they don't, they simply walk away. Because of this, photographing animals is less about control and more about observation and patience. Rather than pushing them to fit an ideal image, it's about allowing them to be seen as they are—comfortable, natural, and completely themselves.

Q:
Many of your works highlight adopted animals. Why has pet adoption become such an important part of your practice and life?

Like many people, I used to see stray animals through common stereotypes—as pitiful, scared, or aggressive. But after spending time with them, I realized they are incredibly lovable and cheerful. Many of those perceptions are simply labels humans place on them.

Working out also helps me clear my mind. When I get into the zone, it allows my thoughts to reset and that is often when creative ideas surface. I've always wanted to challenge those labels. Through photography, I hope more people can see the charm of mixed-breed dogs and cats, giving them a better chance to be seen, chosen, and welcomed into a home.

I brought everyday moments of cats and dogs to life with a lighthearted, humorous touch. Through playful lines and charming, expressive images, I want to gently share the message of “Adopt Instead of Buy”. I want to touch young audiences and pet lovers with my designs, inviting them to feel the simple joy of offering an animal a loving home.

Q:
What’s the inspiration behind your designs? What story would you like to tell others through your designs?

The inspiration comes from the moments shared with each animal. Every dog and cat has its own personality, and through my photographs, I hope people can see more than just cuteness. I want to capture their emotions and character. When people understand those differences, they begin to realize that bringing an animal into your life isn’t about finding the perfect pet—it’s about accepting them as they are and growing together as companions.

Q:
Taiwan has a very visible street animal culture. Has living and working here shaped the way you see or photograph animals?

The conversation around stray animals in Taiwan is incredibly nuanced, with various groups bringing different perspectives and priorities to the table. For me, instead of trying to weigh in on every debate, I feel it's more impactful to focus on what I do best.

That’s why we dedicated ourselves to photography. Through our images, we show these animals as they truly are. Once people begin to recognize their depth of emotion and personality, adoption shifts from an act of charity to choosing a genuine life partner. That, to me, is how we create sustainable, long-term change for animal welfare.

Q:
When creating these patches, what qualities of animals or messages around adoption were most important for you to convey?

Dogs often have moments when they seem deep in thought, while cats are effortlessly themselves, grooming or stretching wherever they please. These two observations became the inspiration for this design. I hope it reminds people that animals can think and feel, while also bringing a sense of familiarity that makes them want to spend more time with their own pets.

Q:
If your patch could travel anywhere in the world on someone’s bag, where would you hope it goes?

Honestly, I’d love to see these patches travel to every corner of the globe. If these two designs can remind travelers of their pets back home, or even spark a conversation about animal welfare along the way. That’s really all we could ever ask for.
